Bringing Independent Media to Local Kiwis
The Independent Media Association is the nation representative for independently owned media channels in New Zealand.
Our Story
For many years we have all worked in our local communities, working with local councils and businesses, and we are individual local businesses too. We receive no funding like some media platforms as we were seen to be small businesses.
During Cyclone Gabriel the importance of local media was highlighted, as the only communications available when there is no electricity or online networks, was local media. We realized we have the capability to keep locals informed during a civil defence emergency, unlike some of the other platforms.
Rob Walker of Beach FM 106.3 started to reach out to other independent media businesses and found we were all encountering the same hurdles. The decision was made to form the Independent Media Association. Bringing independent media businesses together. The IMA has a bigger voice representing privately owned and operated media businesses in New Zealand.
